Miscarriage & Ectopic Pregnancy Precautions

Miscarriage—the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Vaginal spotting or bleeding

  • Pain or cramping in your lower abdomen or lower back

  • Inability to demonstrate a heartbeat via ultrasound after 6 weeks gestational age

  • Fluid or tissue passing from your vagina

What to Do Next

If you suspect a miscarriage, contact your healthcare provider or seek care at the Emergency Department. Medical professionals can monitor you for blood loss and pregnancy hormone levels and can ensure no remnants of the pregnancy remain in the uterus.

Ectopic Pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube, but can occur in the ovary, cervix, or abdominal cavity.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Severe pain centered on one side of the abdomen or pelvis

  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, or blackouts

  • Abnormally low blood pressure

  • The passage of tissue from the vagina

What to Do Next

Seek medical treatment immediately. A tubal pregnancy is a medical emergency!
