Abortion Pill

Medical Abortion

A medical abortion is performed by taking mifepristone (Mifeprex) or methotrexate and misoprostol (Cytotec). This method of abortion can be used until the 9th week of pregnancy. Risk factors to consider:

  • ectopic pregnancy

  • bleeding disorders or taking blood thinners

  • liver, kidney, or lung disease

  • intrauterine device (IUD) implantation

  • taking corticosteroid medications

  • allergies to mifepristone or misoprostol

  • anemia

  • frequent seizures

Surgical Abortion

Surgical Abortion

Vacuum/suction aspiration is used during the first trimester and early into the second trimester. Risk factors to consider:

  • abnormal uterus function or shape

  • blood clotting disorders

  • pelvic infection

  • other serious health conditions

Dilation and evacuation (D&E) is used in the second trimester of pregnancy.

Induction abortion is done in the second trimester of pregnancy.
